Our History
The MHCC, originally known as the Community Hall for Asheville’s Greek Orthodox Church Community has a long standing history of hosting events dating back to its construction in the early 1960s. During the past two years, the center has been renovated and named in honor of Tony and Helen Morris, Greek immigrants to Asheville in the early 1920s, and who were among the founding families of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church which is Western North Carolina’s only Greek Orthodox Christian Church.
The Holy Trinity community raised about $250,000 to renovate their community center, and were assisted by a large memorial donation from Steve & Frosene (Morris) Zeis, long time stewards of Holy Trinity. Frosene remembers her parents dedication to religion, family and work. “My father’s business was The Asheville Lunchroom on the corner of Patton and Asheland Avenue in Asheville for many years. Both of my parents loved their adopted city and homeland and they were proud to live and work here. They fostered a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility to the church–these were their highest priorities. Steve and I wanted to honor their memory, as well as all the other immigrant families who came to Asheville with a willingness to work and contribute to this area, as well as perpetuate their faith and heritage. In their memory, we are so proud to witness the renovation of the Morris Hellenic Cultural Center and hope it continues its long tradition of hosting community functions for many years.”
